Glycolic Acid Products and AHA
(but were afraid to ask)
AHA's are natural products and are often referred to as fruit acids which include: glycolic acid (from sugar cane), lactic acid (from sour milk), citric acid (from citrus fruits), tartaric acid (from fermented grapes).
Glycolic Acid is most frequently used in anti-aging and Acne products.
Benefits of glycolic acid - AHA
- alpha hydroxy acids beautify the skin
- slows down the aging process
- helps to minimize fine lines and wrinkles
- increases elasticity
- exfoliates dead skin cells
- stimulates natural collagen production
- minimizes pores
- improves texture of rough, damaged skin
- helps to even out skin discolorations
- normalizes oily, acneic, troubled skin
- smoother, fresher appearance
Many Estheticians and Doctors use AHA peels to treat acne and to slow down the aging process.
Are all Glycolic Acids created equally?
Absolutely NOT! The differences between products are:
- The AHA that's actually used in a formula.
- The concentration of active product.
- The carrier of active ingredients as well as.
- The PH of the formulation.
The PH of a product is critical. To experience visible results. recent studies by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) show that any AHA product that registers over a ph 4 is rendered therapeutically ineffective.
There is neutralized and non-neutralized glycolic acid. Neutralized glycolic formations consist of a base such as sodium or Amonium hydrozide to reduce causticity. However, when you add a base to an acid this results in the formation of salt and water, rendering the glycolic acid essentially ineffective.
A non-neutralized glycolic acid formulation should be used for optimal results. Most neutralized products range from PH 4 to PH 7. The normal acid mantle of the skin is approximately PH 5.4.
At a PH 7.0 - 100% of the glycolic acid is neutralized to salt.
At a PH 6.2 - 85% of the glycolic acid is neutralized.

What are AHA Peels
Many Estheticians use AHA peels for treating acne as well as for slowing down the aging process. Because of its gentle action, it helps to keep acne and acne problems under control giving the skin a smoother, fresher appearance.
The real RENEWAL/REJUVENATION process starts with a peel. Our md exfoliation treatment is powerful yet extra gentle, making it extra-safe to use on almost any skin. It rapidly increases exfoliation and accelerates the skin's own natural cell renewal process.
Recommended for many different skin conditions and problems like wrinkles, fine lines, aging, rosacea and sun damaged skin. These peels quickly deliver substantial improvement in superficial lines, skin texture, hyper pigmentation, blemishes and enlarged pores without irritating the skin.
The ph level (measure of acidity) of the products many professionals use is lower. It means it's more acidic and can therefore be a bit irritating.
I highly recommend to have at least one peel done every 2 months to remove dead skin cells. A most beneficial action to help the skin healthy, regain and keep its radiance and glow.
Best results are achieved with an intensive treatment series of 6 peels. One every 7 - 14 days. You can do this treatment safely twice a year. Men should not shave for 24 hours prior to an AHA peel. AHA Peels enhance the results of treatment products for all skin conditions and all skin types.
AHA treatments and peels estheticians use are applied to the skin for a very short time. It can vary from 2 - 5 minutes.
Anti Aging treatments will promote the growth of new collagen and elastin, promote epidermal growth to thicken the epidermis, or smooth, lighten and brighten the epidermal surface. For optimal results you will need a series of 6 treatments. Home care products are highly recommended for utmost results.
Acne Treatments depending on how severe your acne is you will need a series of 6 - 12 treatments to clear up your skin. These treatments should be done 10 - 14 days apart. The results are very satisfactory. Again, appropriate home care products are highly recommend to achieve and maintain optimum results. These skin care treatments are not recommended while you are taking acne medication.
