Saving your skin with chocolate - Happy Easter

Holistic health trends definitely include CHOCOLATE

Many spas nowadays offer chocolate treatments.
They range from manicures and pedicures to body scrubs,
massages, body wrapsand even chocolate wax.
Try it, you'll love it.

Everything CHOCOLATE includes SAVING Your Skin With CHOCOLATE
The word "skin" can evoke several different thoughts - smooth, rough, freckled, tanned, pale or even sexy. It's also an outward sign of beauty,
age and inner health. If skin is not cared for, it can become a source of
serious health problems. There are numerous factors that contribute to
the health of our skin. Exposure to sun and ultraviolet light is very problematic
in today's society.Poor diet, smoking, not exercising and of course sun
exposure are also key contributors to unhealthy skin. Besides the wrinkling,
dryness, age spots and so on, the most threatening problem of all is the
risk of skin cancer which begins at a cellular level.

CHOCOLATE to the Rescue
Just as the damage that affects our skin beings at the cellular level, the protections we offer our skin should as well begin there.Minimizing our exposure to sunlight and wearing adequate sunblock which filters UVA, UVB AND UVC rays is key in prevention.

Improving our diet is another important step.
Surprisingly, emerging research confirms cocoa can provide needed benefits and reduce the risk of disease for healthy skin. Various favonoids, many of which are contained in cocoa and chocolate products, have been studied for their ability to neutralize free radicals and minimize oxidative damage. Other research suggests that these flavonoids may also be able to promote healthy skin by modulating enzyme activity, relieving inflammation and positively affecting cell division. In addition, chocolate contains other nutrients that likely contribute to overall healthy skin, including Vitamin C, Zinc, Mananese, Vitamin E, B vitamins, Magnesium and Copper. It's also important to note that these health benefits are offered by dark chocolate, typically comprised of about 70% cocoa solids.
Dark chocolate, unlike other lighter chocolates, is not composed of many
commercial products high in sugar, fat and other "non-chocolate" ingredients
such as milk fats or hydrogenated oil.

CHOCOLATE and Skin Health
What the Research ShowsA recent study from German reseachers investigating the possible benefits of cocoa flavanols on the skin, involved two groups of women. One group was given a high-flavanol cocoa beverage, the other a low-flavanol one. The reserachers examinded the skin sensitivity of the subjects to UV irradiation, skin structure and textures, skin blood flow and hydration. the findings were very impressive, indicating that the women who consumed the high-flavanol cocoa drink showed significant improvements in skin quality. Blood flow in the skin improved, as did skin texture, thickness, hydration and lack of redness. Reserachers also found that skin cell DNA was protected through cell-signaling mechanisms brought on by the presence of flavanols. In the end, the researchers concluded that regular consumption of cocoa high inflavonols would likely support the body's defenses against the threat of UV light.

In addition, a 2006 study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found
that a single serving of flavanol-rich cocoa consuming acutely increased blood flow and oxygen saturation in the derma layer of the skin. In fact, researchers
found that oxygen saturation to the derma was nearly doubled after the single
dose of cocoa. Ongoing research strongly suggests that cocoa and its principal
ingredients provide both a cosmetic solution for signs of aging and a potent
protection against more serious skin problems, including skin cancer.

Adding cocoa and dark chocolate foods to your diet is an excellent way to
achieve beauty from within AND help you look younger and feel better.

Cancer of the skin is the most common of all cancers in the US, and more than one million cases of non-melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed each year.
